Whig Political Party

The Invention of Party Politics

The Invention of Party Politics
This ambitious work uncovers the constitutional foundations of that most essential institution of modern democracy, the political party. Taking on Richard Hofstadter's classicThe Idea of a Party System, it rejects the standard view that Martin Van Buren whig political party and other Jacksonian politicians had the idea of a modern party system in mind when they built the original Democratic party.Grounded in an original retelling of Illinois politics of the 1820s whig political party and 1830s, the book also includes chapters that connect the state-level narrative to national history, from the birth of the Constitution to the Dred Scott case. In this reinterpretation, Jacksonian party-builders no longer anticipate twentieth-century political assumptions but draw on eighteenth-century constitutional theory to justify a party division between the democracy whig political party and the aristocracy. Illinois is no longer a frontier latecomer to democratic party organization but a laboratory in which politicians use Van Buren's version of the Constitution, states' rights, whig political party and popular sovereignty to reeducate a people who had traditionally opposed party organization. The modern two-party system is no longer firmly in place by 1840. Instead, the system remains captive to the constitutional commitments on which the Democrats whig political party and Whigs founded themselves, even as the specter of sectional crisis haunts the parties' constitutional visions. Transatlantic Radicals and the Early American Republic

Transatlantic Radicals and the Early American Republic
In the transatlantic world of the late eighteenth century, easterly winds blew radical thought to America. Thomas Paine had already arrived on these shores in 1774 whig political party and made his mark as a radical pamphleteer during the Revolution. In his wake followed more than 200 other radical exiles -- English Dissenters, Whigs, whig political party and Painites; Scottish lads o`parts ; whig political party and Irish patriots -- who became influential newspaper writers whig political party and editors whig political party and helped change the nature of political discourse in a young nation. Michael Durey has written the first full-scale analysis of these radicals, evaluating the long-term influence their ideas have had on American political thought. Transatlantic Radicals uncovers the roots of their radicalism in the Old World whig political party and tells the story of how these men came to be exiled, how they emigrated, whig political party and how they participated in the politics of their adopted country. Nearly all of these radicals looked to Paine as their spiritual leader whig political party and to Thomas Jefferson as their political champion. They held egalitarian, anti-federalist values whig political party and promoted an extreme form of participatory democracy that found a niche in the radical wing of Jefferson`s Republican Party. Their divided views on slavery, however, reveal that democratic republicanism was unable to cope with the realities of that institution. As political activists during the 1790s, they proved crucial to Jefferson`s 1800 presidential victory; then, after his views moderated whig political party and their influence waned, many repatriated, others drifted into anonymity, whig political party and a few managed to find success in the New World. Although many of these men are known to us through other histories, their influence as a group has never before been soclosely examined. Durey persuasively demonstrates that the intellectual ferment in Britain did indeed have tremendous influence on American politics. His account of that influence sheds considerable light on transatlantic political history whig political party and differences in religious, political, whig political party and economic fre
